<text>Coal miners are highly prone to occupational health risks, such as black lung disease. This
study aims to assess the prevalence of black lung disease and the factors associated with black lung
disease among coal miners in Asia.
Method: This systematic review, conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic
Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, searched through the scientific literature of the following databases: EBSCO, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Scopus. We selected articles that studied black lung disease
among coal miners from 48 countries in Asia and were published between 2014 and 2023. Article quality
was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program.
Result: The seven articles that we review studied a total of 653,635 coal miners from various types of coal
mines from three countries in Asia. Of these miners, 59,998 experienced black lung disease. Black lung
disease is prevalent among 9.18% of coal miners in Asia, which is approximately four times higher than
the worldwide prevalence. Common factors that influence black lung disease in Asia include age, years of
dust exposure, smoking, drinking, working types, and sizes of mines, type of mines, respiratory functions,
spirometry parameters, tenure, lack of attention to occupational health, inefficient surveillance, and
weak occupational health service.
Conclusion: Although the prevalence of black lung disease among coal miners in Asia is considerably</text>

<text>The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant surge in glove usage, as recommended by the World
Health Organization. Despite efforts to ensure the quality and safety of gloves, glove-associated skin
diseases such as hand dermatitis have become ubiquitous, particularly among health care workers. This
review discusses the prevalence, causes, and risk factors of hand dermatitis, as well as research efforts in
medical gloves in the past decade to overcome glove-related hand dermatitis. Research papers from 2013
to 2022 were reviewed, selecting only 49 relevant papers from the Ovid, PubMed, and Scopus databases.
The average prevalence of hand dermatitis among health care workers increased from 21.08% to 37.24%
upon the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The cases are likely due to allergies to latex proteins, rubber
additives, and accelerators commonly found in gloves. Using alternatives to latex gloves, such as
accelerator-free and latex-free glove options, can help reduce allergy-induced hand dermatitis. Strict
hand hygiene practices, such as frequent hand washing and the use of sanitizers, are also contributing
factors in contracting hand dermatitis. Over the past decade, glove research advancements have focused
mainly on reducing or immobilizing latex proteins. These include the use of biodegradable dialdehyde,
sodium alginate, arctigenin, bromelain, papain, UV-LED, prototype photoreactors, and structure-modified
nanosilica with silane A174. Two effective hand dermatitis preventive measures, i.e. an additional layer of
glove liners and the use of gentle alcohol-based hand sanitizer, were recommended. These advancements represent promising steps towards mitigating hand dermatitis risks associated with glove usage</text>

<text> This research suggested a method for evaluating health and safety performance as a
combination of reactive and active monitoring.
Methods: A number of Freedom of Information requests (FoI) were sent to the Health and safety Executive (HSE) and 100 UK universities. Data on the number of reportable incidents, diseases and dangerous
occurrences were compiled for UK universities and combined with the Impact Ranking for good health
and well-being. A semi-structured survey was used to identify best H&S practices. Subsequently, the
effect of workers’ involvement in H&S management on RIDDOR and near-miss reports, was investigated
using statistical analysis.
Results: A ranking of UK universities that perform highly in Health and Safety (H&S) was assembled and
selected universities were contacted to identify best practices. Best practices were divided into three
categories: team management, roles and responsibilities, and H&S performance monitoring. One of the
findings demonstrated a reverse dependence between provision of a refresher training in risk assessments and a number of reported RIDDOR incidents.
Conclusion: Health and Safety professionals in the universities may find it useful to reflect on these
findings and the identified best practices in order to improve the H&S performance in their own
organisations.</text>

<text> We examined the association between supervisor consultation, as an actual practice
representing supervisor support, and work engagement.
Methods: This was a prospective cohort study in Japan, involving 14,026 participants who met the
requirement for a one-year follow-up. Supervisor consultation was measured using a single question, and
work engagement was defined using the Japanese version of the nine-item Utrecht Work Engagement
Scale (UWES-9). Associations were examined using linear regression analysis.
Results: Supervisor consultation was positively associated with work engagement after adjusting for
gender, age, education, income, and industry (b ¼ 3.474; p < 0.001). The relationship remained significant after adjustment for perceived supervisor support, although the coefficient decreased (b ¼ 1.315;
p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Supervisor consultation probably acted on work engagement in different ways than
perceived supervisor support</text>

<text>Replacement drivers represent a significant portion of platform labor in the Republic of
Korea, often facing night shifts and the demands of emotional labor. Research on replacement drivers is
limited due to their widespread nature. This study examined the levels of presenteeism and absenteeism
among replacement drivers in comparison to those of paid male workers in the Republic of Korea.
Methods: This study collected data for replacement drivers and used data from the 6th Korean Working
Conditions Survey for paid male workers over the age of 20 years. Propensity score matching was performed to balance the differences between paid workers and replacement drivers. Multivariable logistic
regression was used to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals for presenteeism and absenteeism by replacement drivers. Stratified analysis was conducted for age groups,
educational levels, income levels, and working hours. The analysis was adjusted for variables including
age, education, income, working hours, working days per week, and working duration.
Results: Among the 1,417 participants, the prevalence of presenteeism and absenteeism among
replacement drivers was 53.6% (n ¼ 210) and 51.3% (n ¼ 201), respectively. The association of presenteeism and absenteeism (adjusted OR [95% CI] ¼ 8.42 [6.3611.16] and 20.80 [95% CI ¼ 14.6029.62],
respectively) with replacement drivers being significant, with a prominent association among the young
age group, high educational, and medium income levels.
Conclusion: The results demonstrated that replacement drivers were more significantly associated with
presenteeism and absenteeism than paid workers. Further studies are necessary to establish a strategy to
decrease the risk factors among replacement drivers</text>

<text>The present paper aimed to examine whether an aging workforce is associated with an increase in work-related fatal injuries and to explore the underlying reasons for this potential increase.
Material and methods: Aged workers were defined as those who were at least 55 years old. Work-related
fatalities were assessed in aged and young workers who were registered with the workers’ compensation
system in 2021 in the Republic of Korea. Total waged workers, based on raw data from the Local Area
Labor Force Survey in 2021, were used as the denominator to estimate the work-related fatality rates.
Results: Most work-related fatalities in the aged workers occurred among individuals working in the
“construction sector” (58.9%), those with “elementary occupations (unskilled workers)” (46.1%), and
those with the employment status of “daily worker” (60.8%). The estimated incidence (0.973/10,000) of
work-related fatalities among aged workers was about four times higher than that (0.239/10,000) among
younger workers. “Falling,” “collision,” “struck by an object,” and “trip and slip” were more frequent
types of work-related fatalities among aged workers relative to young workers. The category of “buildings, structures, and surfaces” was a more frequent cause of work-related fatalities among aged workers
than among young workers.
Conclusions: Aged workers had a higher incidence of work-related fatalities than young workers.
Frequent engagement in precarious employment and jobs, coupled with the greater physical vulnerability of aged workers, were likely causes of their higher level of work-related fatal injuries</text>

<text>Telework adoption in Taiwan has surged because of government guidelines during the
COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the disclosure practices of Taiwanese-listed companies,
assessing their adherence to government telework guidelines and their correlation with corporate
governance, focusing on occupational health measures.
Methods: We conducted a guideline-adherent cohort analysis of the 2020 and 2021 sustainability reports
of 295 Taiwanese-listed companies. We assessed their disclosure of corporate measures for teleworking
in alignment with two government guidelines, specifically occupational health measures. Using the
McNemar test and general estimating equation analysis, we compared the 2020 and 2021 responses and
examined their associations with corporate governance rankings.
Results: Telework adoption increased significantly from 2020 to 2021, with 68% of companies reporting
new work modes. The mentioning of government guidelines also increased to 67% by 2021. Companies
with higher governance rankings were more likely to adopt online occupational health measures,
including occupational health services (RR ¼ 2.03; 95% CI ¼ 1.41e2.94; p < 0.001) and mental health
promotion activities (RR ¼ 2.01; 95% CI ¼ 1.06e3.82; p ¼ 0.032), than those with low rankings. Although
on-site and online occupational health services increased, home workspace assessments did not.
Conclusion: Our findings highlight significant upward trends in the disclosure of telework measures
following the issuance of government guidelines. Corporate governance is significantly associated with
the implementation of occupational health measures. Amid the evolution of teleworking, both government guidelines and corporate governance have become essential for shaping work arrangements and
ensuring workforce well-being</text>

<text> Webtoon, a digital form of comics created in the Republic of Korea, has spread widely with
advantages that anyone can become a cartoonist and that autonomy of creation is guaranteed. The
purpose of this study is to identify the working conditions of webtoon writers and analyze the relationship between these conditions and depressive symptoms.
Methods: A survey was carried out on webtoon writers and a survey data of 312 webtoon writers were
analyzed. The questionnaire included basic socio-demographic characteristics, webtoon writers’
contractual type, fields of activity (webtoon creator, story writer, illustrator), and working environment
(labor discretion etc.). We investigated depressive symptoms and analyzed its relation to the work
environment of webtoon writers.
Results: Webtoon writers were exposed to long working hours, high labor intensity, limited labor
discretion, negative comments from readers, and had a high prevalence of depressive symptoms.
Compared to story writers who contracted directly with platforms, story writers and the illustrators who
contracted with content providers (CPs) were 9.51 times (OR ¼ 9.51, 95% CI ¼ 1.47 - 61.33) and 6.47 times
(OR ¼ 6.47, 95% CI ¼ 1.08 e 38.75) more likely to have depressive symptoms, respectively.
Conclusions: This study emphasizes the urgent necessity to improve the overall working environment in
the webtoon industry and implement measures to tackle the escalating mental health challenges faced
by illustrators and story writers contracted with CPs, especially given the increasing popularity of novel

<text>This study aimed to analyze the trend of occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL)
in Brazilian workers at a metallurgical plant with a hearing conservation program (HCP), which has been
addressed in a previous study.
Methods: All 152 workers in this time series (20032018) participated in the HCP and used personal
protective equipment. All annual audiometry records in the company’s software were collected from the
electronic database. The trend of ONIHL was analyzed with the joinpoint regression model. The hearing
thresholds of ONIHL cases at the end of the series were compared with those found in a national
reference study.
Results: The binaural mean hearing thresholds at 3, 4, and 6 kHz at the end of the series were higher for
ages 50 years, exposures 85 dB (A), time since admission >20 years, and maintenance workers.
Significance was found only in the group divided by age. There was an increasing time trend of ONIHL,
though with a low percentage variation for the period (AAPC ¼ 3.5%; p ¼ 0.01). Hearing thresholds in this
study differed from the reference one.
Conclusion: Despite the unmet expectation of a stationary trend in the study period, the time pace of
ONIHL evolution did not follow what was expected for a population exposed to noise. These findings
signal to the scientific community and public authorities that good ONIHL control is possible when HCP is
well implemented.</text>

<text>Effective near-miss management is important in preventing workplace accidents. A company’s inadequate response to near-miss reports can lead workers to feel insecure and dissatisfied with
the company. We investigated the relationship between companies’ responses to near-miss reports and
turnover intentions of workers.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using online self-administered questionnaire survey to
workers aged 20 years in Japan in March 2022. The analysis included 5,071 participants who had nearmiss experiences and reported them to their companies. The independent variable was companies’ responses to near-miss reports, classified into three categories: adequate response group, inadequate
response group, and no response group. The dependent variable was turnover intentions. We calculated
the odds ratio and 95% confidential interval (CI) using multilevel logistic regression analyses nested for
industries and adjusted for covariates.
Results: Of the 5,071 participants, 3,058 (60.3%) were adequate response group, 1,484 (29.3%) were
inadequate response group, and 529 (10.4%) were no response group. In multivariable adjusted model,
compared with adequate response group, the odds ratio of inadequate response group and no response
group were 1.80 (95% CI: 1.56e2.08) and 2.63 (95% CI: 2.15e3.22), respectively.
Conclusion: Our results suggested that there was a relationship between companies’ responses to the
near-miss reports and turnover intentions of workers. It is important not only to collect near-misses but
also to respond appropriately to the reports and provide feedback to workers</text>
