Title

Transforming the system to support equitable publication of community-based improvement (COMMMENTARY)

Description

Key Messages
• The field of academic publication has an opportunity to
advance equity by closing the gap between the communitybased improvement work being conducted versus work
being published. Initial recommendations include:
• Lower the burden on and increase the value to those who
are leading community improvement work to submit their
work for publication.
• Include leaders of community improvement work, especially community residents, on journal editorial boards.
• Require shared leadership with context experts (e.g. community members and patients, students) at all stages of
design, implementation/practice, and publication.
• Revise guidelines for journals’ methods and results
sections to facilitate shared learning in the field and adopt
standard, shared guidelines across journals.
