Pursed Lip Breathing.
Description
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a persistent blockage of the respiratory tract caused by emphysema and chronic bronchitis. One of the non-pharmacological management is by applying pursed lip breathing. Purse-lip breathing is a breathing technique that is used to expel air by creating strength by compressing/plunging the lips. The purpose of Pursed lip breathing is as a non-pharmacological and non-invasive nursing intervention therapy that can reduce shortness of breath (decrease
respiratory frequency), increase oxygen saturation and increase peak respiratory flow. This writing method is a case study by applying the results of EBP in nursing care to patients. The results of the case study were Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary (COPD) patients with nursing problems Ineffective Airway Clearance b.d Sputum accumulation, Ineffective Breathing Pattern b.d Respiratory Effort Barriers, Gas Exchange Impaired b.d Ventilation-perfusion imbalance. The main
intervention for the problem of Ineffective Breathing Pattern nursing is Airway Management by administering Pursed Lip Breathing therapy. Purse-lip breathing is carried out once a day with a duration of 15 minutes for 4 days. The evaluation results were obtained before being given Purse-lip breathing with a RR of 27x/minute and 97% saturation, after being given Purse-lip breathing it became 24x/minute and 99% saturation. Purse-lip breathing measurement using oximetry. So it can be concluded that there is a decrease in shortness of breath in patients by
monitoring RR and Oxygen Saturation using oximetry.
