Effortful Swallow Exercise–Swallowing Ability–Non Hemorrhagic Stroke–Swallowing Disorder
Description
Background: Stroke is a dysfunction in the brain, which is caused by blockage or rupture of blood vessels in
the brain. The clinical manifestation that is often encountered is swallowing disorders that are at risk of causing
aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, an intervention is needed, one of which is by swallowing exercises using the
Effortful Swallow technique. Based on the initial study, obtained from 10 patients with Non-Hemorrhagic CVA,
as many as 2 patients experienced swallowing disorders. Objective: To provide an overview of Effortful Swallow
Exercise actions on swallowing ability and to provide comprehensive nursing care for stroke patients with
swallowing disorders in ICU 2 of a Private Hospital in Yogyakarta. Results: The results of the assessment of
Mrs. N aged 64 years, found difficulty swallowing food and the results of screening dysphagia <250 cc choking.
Then an Effortful Swallow Exercise intervention was carried out on February 19-21, 2024, which was carried
out 2 times a day with a duration of 15 minutes using the MBSS instrument, it was found that patients
experienced an increase in swallowing ability on the third day of implementation, where patients were able to
finish 1 portion of filter porridge without choking. Conclusion: Effortful Swallow Exercise therapy is able to
improve swallowing ability in stroke patients. Suggestion: Can be used as one of the nursing independent
interventions in dealing with stroke patients with swallowing disorders.
