CASE REPORT: TEKNIK MENDELSOHN MANEUVER TERHADAP KEMAMPUAN MENELAN PASIEN STROKE INFARK DENGAN DIAGNOSA KEPERAWATAN GANGGUAN MENELAN DI RUANG INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Subject
Infarction Stroke, Swallowing Disorders, Swallowing Therapy, Mendelsohn Maneuver
Description
Background: Cerebral infarction is a disruption in blood flow to the brain, causing brain cells to lose
oxygen and important nutrients, causing parts of the brain to die. The incidence of dysphagia in stroke
patients is around 14% -94%. Nine out of ten patients admitted to Intensive Care Unit 2 at private
hospitals in Yogyakarta from January 29 – February 5 2024 experienced swallowing problems so a
nasogastric tube (NGT) was installed. Objective: To describe the Mendelsohn Maneuver intervention
on the swallowing ability of stroke infarction patients. Results: Mr. J, 74 years old, with a cholesterol
risk factor for stroke, infarction, experiencing swallowing disorders, underwent the Mendelsohn
Maneuver intervention, the Functional Dysphagia Scale measuring instrument, pre-test score 38, post-
test score 24 after two interventions with a duration of 30 minutes per session. Conclusion: The
Mendelsohn Maneuver intervention was successful in improving swallowing ability, but because the
patient was reluctant to eat, the intervention could not be continued. Suggestion: The next researcher
will increase the duration of the intervention days to a frequency of 2 times a day so that more
significant results can be seen on the Functional Dysphagia Scale.
