Description
Stroke is the leading cause of disability and death worldwide, which occurs when blood vessels that
supply oxygen and nutrients to the brain are blocked or ruptured. One of the main challenges for stroke
patients is the inability to perform self-care, which is caused by weakness in the extremities and
decreased mobility function, disrupting daily activities. The family system is an important factor in
meeting the self-care needs of stroke patients. Family support can be in the form of family attitudes and
involvement towards sick members through attention, emotions and assessment in interpersonal
relationships. The research method uses a correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. The
research sample was 57 outpatient stroke patients who were taken using a purposive sampling
technique. The measuring instrument used was the family support questionnaire and the Barthel index
checklist. The results of the statistical test using chi-square showed that the p value = 0.036, which
means there is a significant relationship between family support and self-care in stroke patients at the
Santa Elisabeth Hospital Medan in 2024. Family members should actively participate in accompanying,
training and motivating stroke patients in improving self-care. Further researchers are expected to
educate patients and their families in implementing a healthy lifestyle to prevent recurrent stroke
attacks.
