Description
Background: Volcanoes are fractures in the Earth's crust where magma or other liquid gases
emerge to the surface. Volcanic eruptions result in material damage, loss of life, environmental
destruction, and psychological impacts. The psychological effects of volcanic eruptions are an issue
that requires attention, as they can lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD). Objective: To find out the psychosocial conditions of the Merapi slope community after 13
years of Merapi eruption in Pelemsari Village, Umbulharjo Village, Kapanewon Cangkringan,
Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta in 2024. Methods: This is a quantitative correlation study design with
a cross-sectional approach. The research sample was Pelemsari residents with 33 respondents as
sampling. The measuring instrument was the PCL-5 questionnaire. Result: The research results
showed that the majority of respondents did not experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
(84.8%), but a small percentage still exhibited PTSD symptoms (15.2%). Factors such as gender,
age, occupation, and level of education also influence the psychosocial conditions of the residents.
This study emphasizes the importance of ongoing psychosocial support for communities affected by
disasters, especially those who are still experiencing prolonged trauma. Conclusion: Even after 13
years since Merapi eruption, some people continue to experience post-traumatic disorder.
Suggestion: Future researchers are encouraged to conduct qualitative studies to gain a deeper
understanding of individual subjective experiences and perspectives.
Keywords: Psychosocial Conditions, Merapi Eruption, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
