Description

Encephalopathy is a condition of decreased consciousness due to certain disorders that attack the brain area, which is a clinical manifestation of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). This pathology can be diagnosed
using MRI modalities. The main protocols for brain MRI are T2 Axial FSE, T1 Axial SE, Axial FLAIR, and T2 Sagittal/Coronal FSE. However, this routine sequence still has drawbacks, and in some studies DWI sequences were applied to the examination of these cases. This study aims to determine the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities, especially the DWI sequence in this case. This research is a literature
review study. Articles obtained via the internet, with data sources PubMed, AJR, Google Scholar, Proquest, and Sciencedirect, with the keywords "MRI Brain Encephalopathy Coronavirus Disease 2019" which were then extracted. The results of this study indicate that the application of DWI sequences can reveal restricted areas or diffusion restrictions due to clinical conditions leading to edema with a more sensitive scan and shorter time as DWI does not require contrast media.
