BEHAVIOR OF AUTISTIC CHILDREN
Subject
pumpkin, lemuru fish, ASD behavior
Description
The number of Autism Spectrum Disorders children in Indonesia is increasing. ASD is a multisystem disorder that has an impact on behavioral disorders. Intake of DHA, tryptophan amino acid in the daily diet which is important for the synthesis of serotonin, is suspected to decrease and result in bad behavior. The purpose of this study was to
analyze the effect of functional food on pumpkin and lemuru based on gluten-free and casein-free formulas on ASD behavior. A randomized pretest and posttest without control group were used. The research subjects were 54 ASD children with inclusion criteria. The subjects were intervened by pumpkin (tryptophan levels 56 mg/day), lemuru fish (DHA levels 320 mg/day), a combination of pumpkin (tryptophan levels 28 mg/day) and lemuru fish (DHA levels 160 mg/day), a combination of pumpkin (Tryptophan levels 7 mg/day) and lemuru fish (DHA levels
40 mg/day) for 12 weeks. Analysis of tryptophan levels used the HPLC method; DHA levels used the GC method. ASD behavior was assessed using the CARS instrument; functional food intervention monitoring used the comstock form and the daily food intake used a 24-hour recall form. Different test and correlation test used parametric and nonparametric tests. Subjects experienced significant improvements in each group marked by a decrease in ASD behavior scores, pumpkin (p=0.02), lemuru fish (p=0.00), combination of pumpkin + lemuru fish (p=0.00), combination low dose of pumpkin+ lemuru fish (p=0.00). The best behavior improvement in the combination group of pumpkin + lemuru fish, experienced a decrease in behavioral scores 80% of behavioral
aspects. There was a trend of significant behavioral improvement (p=0.01) in each intervention group.
