Description

One of the mental health problems that are often experienced by the elderly is depression which is related to the inability to walk and be independent. Decreased activity ability in the elderly is a normal thing along with the aging process. The purpose of this research is to prepare a preliminary study on depression in the elderly and measure the level of depression before and after being provided tandem walking exercises. The expected benefits of this study are a decrease in the level of depression and the elderly can be more independent in daily activities according to their abilities. The research method used is a quasi-experimental study with one group pre-and post-test design. The selection of the study sample was simple random with the inclusion criteria of elderly people 50-65 years, experiencing depression problems based on the initial assessment, able to participate in tandem walking exercises, not drinking alcohol and willing to be respondents. A total of 36
respondents in the elderly group at the community had participated in tandem walking exercises for 4 weeks with the assistance of health volunteers and their families at home. The results showed that the mean score for depression in the elderly in the pre-test was 5.3889 and the mean post-test score was 2.5556. Therefore, scheduled and consistent tandem walking exercises can be recommended as a preventive measure to reduce depression rates in the elderly.
